Italcementi is set up in 1864 in Scanzo (Bergamo) as Società Bergamasca per la Fabbricazione del Cemento e della Calce Idraulica. In 1927, when the company has already been quoted at the Milan Stock Exchange for two years, it changes its business name into Italcementi Spa. After becoming the leading cement manufacturer in Italy, at the end of the eighties it begins implementing the first initiatives to internationalise the Group.
In April 1992 Italcementi achieves important international status with its take-over of Ciments Français, one of the main global cement producer. This is the biggest industrial acquisition ever made abroad by an Italian group. The turnover raises from about 775 millions euro to almost 2,600 millions euro in terms of consolidated turnover. The acquisition reshapes Italcementi’s role within the Group as Italian revenues account for only 27.5% of total proceeds down from 97%.
The Group is now operating in 13 countries. Next steps towards expansion are focused on eastern Europe (Bulgaria) and the Far East where new companies in Kazakhstan and Thailand are acquired by the Group. The internationalisation strategy is pursued thanks to the acquisitions in India, that represents the third cement market on a global level, and through the strengthening in the African continent: Italcementi widen its presence in Morocco and enter the Egyptian market. In 2007 the Group debuts in China and Kuwait.

From the operational point of view, Italcementi represents the leader in the cement manufacturing market in Italy and has an industrial system constantly adequation.

In 1997 Italcementi consolidates its verticalization strategy with the acquisition of Calcestruzzi, thus becoming Italian leader in the ready-mixed concrete sector.

After the revamping of the Calusco d’Adda plant, realization work are about to be completed at the one underway in Matera in order to equip the plants with the state-of-the-art technologies from the environmental and productive point of view.

Construction works proceed to build i.lab, Italcementi Group’s new Research and Innovation centre. More than one hundred employees and researchers, who are currently based in other offices, will work at the new centre.
i.lab, a benchmark in Sustainable Architecture in Europe, has been recognised as the best new building in Italy for energy efficiency in the “Best New Building” category and has been awarded by European Commission with the “European GreenBuilding Award 2010”.

As a whole Italcementi has almost 4,000 employees, including the ones employed in Calcestruzzi, Società del Gres (clay pipes), Italgen (electrical energy) and CTG, the Group Technical Centre, in Italy and France (Guerville).
