Italcementi is set up in 1864 in Scanzo (Bergamo) as Società Bergamasca per la Fabbricazione del Cemento e della Calce Idraulica. In 1927, when the company has already been quoted at the Milan Stock Exchange for two years, it changes its business name into Italcementi Spa. After becoming the leading cement manufacturer in Italy, at the end of the eighties it begins implementing the first initiatives to internationalise the Group becoming one of the main global cement producers. From the operational point of view, Italcementi represents the leader in the cement manufacturing market in Italy and has an industrial system constantly adequation. In 1997 Italcementi consolidates its verticalization strategy with the acquisition of Calcestruzzi, thus becoming Italian leader in the ready-mixed concrete sector.
Starting from the years two thousands important revamping works have been implemented to make the Italian industrial network more efficient. After the revamping of the Calusco d’Adda plant (2004), the newly revamped Matera plant has been inaugurated (2011). Authorization procedures concerning the revamping of Rezzato cement plant have been almost finalized; while the authorization procedures relating to the revamping of Monselice plant are underway. Moreover, in 2011 the construction works for the i.lab, Italcementi Group’s new Research and Innovation centre, have been completed. More than one hundred employees and researchers work at the new centre. i.lab, a benchmark in Sustainable Architecture in Europe, has been recognised as the best new building in Italy for energy efficiency in the “Best New Building” category and has been awarded by European Commission with the “European Green Building Award 2010”. Moreover, the building has achieved LEED Platinum certification.
As a whole Italcementi has almost 3,500 employees, including the ones employed in Calcestruzzi and Italgen (electrical energy).
