Italcementi Group operates in the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico through Essroc. Set up in 1866 as Coplay Cement, the company started producing cement in 1872. The name changed into Essroc in 1989, combining the first three letters of Essexville (Michigan) and Rochester (New York) plants.
Essroc, whose headquarters are close to Nazareth plants in Pennsylvania, also acquired an admixture company called Axim.
In spring 2005 a $45 million modernization investment of Nazareth 1 plant was made in order to carry on with the plants revamping projects while, in October, a 4km continuous loop conveyor belt connecting the quarry to Nazareth 1 began operating. Thanks to the conveyor belt the company could get rid of about 350 vehicle transfers through the city centre.

In 2007 Italcementi Group continued its strategy of expanding its operations by strengthening its activities in the field of concrete.
The vertical development of business operations has been carried out by purchasing the Arrow group, a leading company in the industry based in West Virginia, with manufacturing facilities also in Ohio, West Pennsylvania and South Carolina where Essroc is already present in the cement industry with three plants. In Canada, there has been the acquisition of Cambridge, a company active in the area west of Toronto, in the market where Essroc is already present with its Picton cement plant.
In the early 2008, Essroc has purchased Crider & Shockey, a company active in North Virginia, a further step in the integration underway in the ready mixed concrete business in North America.

The new Martinsburg plant (West Virginia), is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.  The substitution of the wet-process kilns with the state-of-the-art technologies available on the market will increase the production capacity of the plant to 2.0 Mt of cement per year.
