The restoration project, co-sponsored by the City Council of Rome, Italcementi, and C.I.M., has returned the tunnel to Rome’s community in a completely renovated condition. The tunnel’s interior was coated with CIM’s Cimax Ecosystem Paint, a white cementitious product based on TX Active®, Italcementi’s patented active technology that makes it possible to destroy organic and inorganic airborne pollutants.A special lighting system was installed inside the tunnel to render the photoactive paint even more effective thereby maximizing the photocatalytic process.
“After implementing a number of applications in many Italian cities, pollution abatement results are astonishing. A notable example in this respect is the project carried out in Milan on a tunnel similar to that of Rome, where 22.7% pollutant abatement has been confirmed. Here in Rome we expect reduction rates to range from 30 to 40% - said Enrico Borgarello, Italcementi Research & Development Director. TX Active® is a certified eco-friendly active principle suitable for a wide range of applications: mortar, paint, plaster, and paving. This is why we are receiving a host of different requests from citizens and public authorities regarding the use of cement-based building materials containing the TX Active® technology. Ours is actually a new proactive contribution toward fighting pollution in our cities. Thanks to this product, developed in the Bergamo-based labs of Italcementi and pioneered here in Rome with the Dives in Misericordia Church, we are improving air quality in various cities.” Within the framework of the sponsorship agreement reached with Rome’s City Council, Italcementi and CIM S.p.A. committed about 500,000 Euro to the project.
