White Shark side by side with Turbocem
Bergamo, 26 October 2005

Italcementi Group is expanding its loose cement sea transport business: Medcem, the shipping venture formed jointly with the Romeo Group, has extended its fleet with the White Shark motorvessel, which joins Turbocem launched in April this year. Medcem has invested approximately 23 million dollars in the new operation.

The White Shark is a bulk carrier with a 29,000 tonne net load capacity over 5 holds, for the transport of finished or semifinished materials (loose cement, clinker), raw materials (slag, steel products) and kiln fuel (coal, petcoke).

The White Shark will be used mainly on the Atlantic route, to transport cement from Europe to the USA (the first cargo will be loaded at the port of Varna in Bulgaria) and to bring back energy products (first unloading operation at Ravenna).

In the meantime, the Turbocem, the first ship in the Medcem fleet, continues to serve the Group’s cement plants in the Mediterranean, mainly on the Vassiliko(Cyprus)/Ancona shipping route. In the first few months since Medcem went into operation, Italcementi has obtained an important saving on sea freight costs.
