As part of its activities for the local community, the Egyptian subsidiary Helwan Cement has signed an agreement with the El Minya Education Department, to make a contribution of 400,000 EGP for seven primary schools in the Samalout district. The fund will be used in academic year 2007 to finance a series of projects to modernize the schools’ facilities, for example creation of gardens, and to purchase teaching aids and equipment such as computers and books.

The company has reached a second agreement with the Engineering Faculty of El Minya University for the installation of a computer laboratory and a language laboratory, and the organization of a training course for 40 students and three workshops on the properties and applications of white cement, in cooperation with Milan Polytechnic.
Under this initiative, the company will award two 40,000 euro scholarships to enable the best engineering graduates at El Minya University to follow a master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Milan Polytechnic.

The first of the three seminars was held in El Minya, a governorate in Upper Egypt 350 km from Cairo, on October 22.
The seminar, “White cement and its structural uses”, was attended by 120 students from El Minya University.
