Set Beton: connecting two continents
May 2006

Set Beton is participating in the Marmaray Project, one of the most challenging infrastructure project in Turkey, that entails the upgrading of the 76 kilometre long railway system in Istanbul, connecting Halkalı on the European side with Gebze on the Asian side through what will be the deepest immersed tunnel in the world.

Railway tracks on both sides of Bosphorus Strait will be connected to each other through a 12 kilometre long immersed tunnel (1.4 km of which will pass under the Bosphorus Strait at a 58 metre depth). Italcementi Group’s Turkish subsidiary will contribute to the building of this tunnel, for which a total of 70,000 m3 of concrete will be necessary. The structure will be put together in collaboration with Taisei Corporation, one of the biggest construction companies with experience in tunnels and underground works.

The Marmaray Project will surely provide a valid solution to Istanbul current urban transportation problems by offering local population an uninterrupted, modern, high-capacity commuter rail system but it could also play a key role in the development of the city and the region.
