"5S": a Japanese way to support Spanish Sustainability
06 October 2006

Sustainability is a serious job at all Italcementi Group subsidiaries. Cementos Rezola, the leading cement producer in the Basque Country, has implemented the project “liveable factory” based on the innovative "5S" Japanese method (sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain) to improve quality, safety and work organization. The “5S” process guarantees benefits not only for employees, making them feeling better about their workplace, but also creates positive impressions on customers. The effect on continuous improvement will entail less waste, better quality and faster lead times.

This project and other ones aimed at ensuring the well being of employees are presented in the Memoria de Sostenibilidad 2005, a SD Report on FyM activities in the North of Spain (Cementos Rezola and Hormigones y Minas). This Report has been written in accordance with the Guidelines for Sustainability Reporting (by GRI), being in addition verified by AENOR, a Spanish organisation dedicated to the development of standardisation and certification in all industrial and service sectors. By publishing this document, FyM is complying with the commitment undertaken in 2003 before the Basque Government, which binds the company to issue an SD Report every two years.

The Report has been presented at PROMA 2006, the International Environmental Fair, that took place in Bilbao from 3 to 6 October. Two years before, at the same fair, Cementos Rezola had distributed the previous edition of its Memoria de Sostenibilidad, becoming the first Spanish cement producer to publish this kind of document. PROMA is the ideal forum for environmental research, for technological advances in cleaner production and for environmental business affairs. This year’s edition had growth and internationalisation as main themes.
