Video of event
Is it possible to achieve economic growth without jeopardizing the environment?
These videos present the view points of three leading experts interviewed on this topic.

GROWTH DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT
Suketu Metha

Current economic growth can damage the environment. Is this the price to pay for bringing emerging Countries up to the same level of development as the advanced Countries?
Suketu Metha sustains that emerging countries have the right to concentrate on economic growth and pay less attention to the environment and emissions.
TaoTao Chen talks about China being more willing to embrace the objectives regarding global climate protection whilst Obama launches the idea of a Global Forum on energy that faces more extensive post-Kyoto negotiations than those conducted by the U.N. so far.

NEW HOPE TECHNOLOGY
TaoTao Chen
The development of new technologies is the starting point for development orientated towards sustainability without penalizing growth. It is necessary to abandon the more polluting technologies and operations and concentrate development on new eco-compatible and eco-efficient technologies whilst valorizing optimized local practices such as examples of sustainable architecture.
In Suketu Metha’s opinion it is now possible to start to discuss the reduction of emissions due to the fact that there is now a large number of innovative technologies available.
China is starting to discuss the matter with the more developed Countries –particularly with USA – inviting them to supply technologies that are innovative from an environmental point of view.
Obama intends to appoint America the role of driver Country of the new model of eco-compatible production and recreate the image of a Country that will also become a model for low environmental impact technologies.

FROM ADVANCED COUNTRIES TO EMERGING COUNTRIES
Barack Obama
The transfer of knowledge from the advanced countries to the emerging countries not only contributes to fighting underdevelopment but it also helps to reduce the negative impacts of climatic change.
Obama considers it is essential to establish a connection with the emerging Countries to which clean technologies should be transferred.
TaoTao Chen emphasises the importance of the role of foreign firms in China.
A positive role when the new actors enforce environmental and social quality standards giving a fundamental contribution to the modernization of the Chinese manufacturing system.
A particularly negative role when the new actors “take advantage” of the medium-low standards in force within the Country. Suketu Metha hopes that the intelligent innovative technologies will be transferred from the advanced Countries to the poorer areas and suggests a careful consideration on migration flows.

TOWARDS A GLOBAL WORLD
There is no longer any division between the Third and First Worlds: the developing world is now standing on the threshold of the developed world.
The two worlds cohabit in New York, in Bombay, in Rome.
People are progressively becoming aware of the fact that we have only one world and we have only one dream.
