| Ankara cement plant | The Ankara Cement Plant of Italcementi Group in Turkey began to use excavation materials from surrounding building construction work as a substitute for clay in 2005. The project objectives were to reduce raw material costs, preserve clay quarry reserves and protect the environment. There is big potential for building construction around the Ankara plant. Initially, excavation materials from the construction work were transported 30-40 km to the municipality excavation material area. The plant recognized that this material was similar to the clay being used in the plant as raw material. Following laboratory analyses it was confirmed that the material was suitable to be used in place of the virgin clay.
As a result, the company developed a communication strategy targeting all building construction companies near the plant as well as local construction companies, clients and subcontractors.
The annual clay requirement of the Ankara Plant is around 280,000 tonnes. In 2005 224,000 tonnes, and in 2006 430,000 tonnes of excavation material were transferred to

The cost saving in 2006 was approximately US $1.7 million (approximately € 1.35 million); the total saving in 2005 and 2006 was around US $ 2.7 million (approximately € 2.15 million). The plant expects to be able to use this type of waste as an alternative raw material for another 3-5 years, which will result in a valuable saving.
