Acknowledged as both a local and a European operator, Financiera y Minera has facilities for energy recovery from used tires at its Añorga and Málaga plants. At the Cementos Rezola factory in Añorga tire chips are supplied by the company Neuciclaje. This company, created in 1997, is owned by a group of tire-collection and cement companies, 30% of its capital being held by Financiera y Minera. This business initiative has its origin in a pilot project launched in 1995 under the sponsorship of the Basque Government and was the first of its kind in Spain. Due to the growth experienced in the waste management sector in general, and in the used tires recovery sector in particular, the Málaga plant obtains supplies from different used tires suppliers spread throughout Spain. However, priority is given to used tires coming from Málaga and Andalusia, in order to achieve the objective of using kilns to solve waste problems in the area local to the plants’ activities. Since the end of 2000, at Cementos Rezola-Añorga, and since 2003 at the Málaga plant, over 30,000 t of used tires have been utilised as an alternative fuel.
