Since 1999, Ciments du Maroc has had a partnership with The Zakoura Foundation to provide education in schools located in rural areas, involving 60 illiterate children between ages 8 and 16. The program consists of 2.5 hour courses delivered 6 days a week, 11 months a year for 3 years. The curriculum is derived from the Ministry of Education. This program allows the children to obtain an education over and above the basic skills of reading and writing. At the end of the 3-year period (instead of the 6 years of the traditional school system), some students enter colleges or vocational schools and some go to work. In addition to this program, three schools have been created with the complete financial support of Ciments du Maroc, an investment of 15,500 Euro per school per year.
In the words of Noureddine Ayouch, Chairman of The Zakoura Foundation, "Ciments du Maroc has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the local community by contributing to this project, which is different from any voluntary work or charity. Making education available to people is an act of empowerment, it allows them to become capable of making their own decisions and prepares them for employment. This initiative is particularly praiseworthy since the schools supported are in the vicinity of Ciments du Maroc plants. The community is grateful to Ciments du Maroc for such an important contribution." |
