| Waste oil stock tank, Ankara plant | Because the cement industry is highly energy intensive, using waste oil as a fuel can reduce fuel costs as well as contribute to environmental protection. Italcementi Group’s Ankara plant started to use waste oil as an alternative fuel in December 2005, after receiving a waste oil burning license from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in February 2005. Between February and December 2005, the plant received approximately 500 tonnes of waste oil from the national association in charge of collecting motor oils on behalf of motor oil producers and suppliers.
A 1000 m3 fuel oil tank was converted and modified according to the national standards for use as a waste oil stock tank. The site license allows 1000 lt/h of waste oil to be burned as an alternative fuel. Nevertheless, because of the low volume of waste oil collected by the above mentioned association for recovery in cement plants, the present amount burned is 300-400 lt/h. The thermal energy input from waste oil is about 8.2%. By using waste oil as an alternative fuel, the amount of fossil fuel needed to produce cement is decreased.

| Fuel costs reduction and environment protection can go hand in hand | Moreover, as a result of using waste oil, the fugitive dust emissions from handling, loading, unloading and transportation of coal are reduced. In the near future, as the amount of waste oil collected by the responsible association increases, the amount of waste oil used as an alternative fuel is expected to increase.
This means that the benefits to the company and to the environment will also increase. The amount of waste oil collected by the plant in 2006 was 832 tons. The investment required for this project was around US $ 50,000 (approximately u 39,840). The saving realized from waste oil utilization is around US $ 40 per ton, meaning that the total saving realized in 2006 alone was around US $ 33,000 (approximately u 26,250). The plant has begun a study to expand the Waste Oil License to cover solid fuel wastes and received this license in February 2007.
