Italcementi Group puts its Sustainability strategy into action through a series of guidelines to be followed by all its employees. Guidelines for Sustainability in the cement industry have been promoted at global level by the CSI. The CSI was launched in conjunction with other global cement producers who are members of the WBCSD, an association of about 190 industrial groups to which Italcementi Group has belonged since 2000. In this context, in 2002 Italcementi Group signed the “Agenda for Action”, the first formal commitment on the part of cement producers to the principles of Sustainable Development.
The Agenda identified six key areas for action in which the industry could make a significant contribution to the realisation of a “more sustainable” society:
- climate protection and CO2 management;
- responsible use of fuels and raw materials;
- employee health and safety;
- emissions reduction;
- local impacts on land and communities;
- reporting and communications.
The CSI has set up special task forces to support and encourage the implementation of the commitments in each of these areas, and Italcementi Group has an active presence in each of these. For the period 2007-2008, the Group has taken over co-Chairmanship of the CSI, meaning that, in a more visible way, Italcementi Group is fully committed to promoting measurable progresses through joint and individual actions in relation to the CSI goals.
As part of the CSI’s extensive engagement with stakeholders, a full progress report will be produced showing the CSI companies’ progress on this Agenda for Action and announcing new initiatives for the future.
The page Table of targets shows the Group’s Sustainability objectives, consistent with the CSI guidelines. As shown in the table, most of the targets introduced in previous years have now been achieved and new targets have been developed, reflecting the Group’s commitment to continuous improvement.
