| Magala cement plant | It should be emphasised that the large majority of strategic industrial investments were for substantial plant refurbishment projects, which also significantly improve plant environmental efficiency and standards. Refurbishment projects are designed with significant attention to their environmental and Safety performance, including innovative approaches to heat recovery, saving indirect CO2 emissions, low NOX combustion, and customised bag filters for dust from stacks.
In 2006, new installation and construction projects with a significant positive effect on future environmental performance included:
- continuation of the revamping project at the Malaga cement plant (Spain);
- a new 5,000 tons of clinker per day capacity line at Martinsburg (USA);
- a new 5,500 tons of clinker per day capacity line at Yerraguntla (India).
Additionally, several projects in Italy, Bulgaria, Morocco and Cyprus underwent a first screening in 2006 and are currently in the definition phase, and feasibility studies were undertaken for greenfield plants in other emerging markets.
