The raw materials used in the production of cement and aggregates are mined in quarries that are subject to environmental regulations and specific administrative obligations regarding permit renewal. The ability to continue quarrying is subject to compliance with regulations, efficient management of mineral reserves, and continuous dialogue with local stakeholders.
Quarry restoration is a significant part of the contribution Italcementi Group makes to conserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems. In a number of countries, the Group and its subsidiaries have developed quarry restoration schemes involving either progressive rehabilitation of the soil used or restoration at the end of a quarry’s lifetime. In particular, co-ordinated rehabilitation is carried out while the quarry is operational, with the double benefit of reducing resource exploitation and restoring the original landscape conditions.
By 2007, 70% of Italcementi Group quarries providing raw materials to cement plants will have adopted a rehabilitation plan based on a long term approach of environmental impact mitigation, landscape design, regular monitoring of the surrounding environment, transparency and stakeholder dialogue.
