Italcementi Group translates its commitment to Sustainable Development from the global to the local level through its Sustainable Development Awareness Programme which requires each plant to develop an Action Plan in line with Group guidelines and adapt it to the local context. The different levels of economic and social development in the countries in which the Group operates mean that each company and each plant needs to work in different ways to meet the expectations of its neighbours, local authorities, action groups, opinion leaders and media. Typical initiatives may range from “open-door” days, to sponsorship of cultural, environmental, leisure and sports facilities and events, all of which are part of the Group’s investments. Donations and partnerships with charity associations are also popular initiatives, often including co-operation with non-profit organisations and local Foundations. In many countries, the Group also finances programmes encouraging the social and economic development of the area, including education programmes for school children and students at local universities. Moreover the Group also undertook several initiatives in the field of medical care during 2006. Developing community capacity enables members of a community to draw on the skills and resources they need to take control and improve their lives. The approach aims to ensure that capacity building is an empowering experience for communities engaged in development programmes, so that their capacity is sustained after the programme ends. Initiatives promoting capacity building are given significant attention by the Group, mainly in the form of assistance in the development of infrastructures for local communities. In 2006, the Group earmarked more than F 6.5 million in favour of local communities, of which approximately 50% was dedicated to initiatives in emerging markets. Donations, charities and sponsorships of cultural, environmental and sports events accounted for about 70% of the total amount.
