Energy from biomass: Italcementi Group’s commitment in this field also encompasses an ambitious project that its Thai subsidiaries - Asia Cement plc and Jalaprathan Cement plc - have been successfully carrying on. Consistently with the Group’s sustainable development policies, the two companies set up a collaborative study program for generating thermal energy from biomass firing. To this end, abundant and easily available residues from Thailand’s most widespread crops - rice, palm shells, coconuts, and sunflowers - are being exploited. Such residues can actually be reused as a fuel in the clinker production process, which is in line with the Group’s commitments to protecting the environment and the climate by using less fossil fuel. In 2006, Takli cement plant - later joined by Pukrang cement plant as well- partially substituted coal and lignite with rice husk. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions were reduced and biomass was efficiently recycled: a sensitive solution for a cleaner environment.
